Recolouring - Joe the Echidnafox

Now, recolouring a sprite is alot simpler than recoloring a pixel art... The only thing though, is that you have to recolour multiple frames instead of just one... This tutorial was designed for use with a program called GraphicsGale, so if you want to know how to do it in MSPaint, you could always check the Pixel Art recolouring tutorial, since recoloring Sprites and Pixel Art are very similar in nature... Note: The sprite in this tutorial has been enlarged to make it easier for viewing... Do not change the size of the sprite while using this tutorial... You can zoom in, but not resize it...

First, you need to select your colours. For this tutorial, we will be recolouring Sonic using his Super form's palette, so move the mouse over a color on Super Sonic, and press the right side mouse button, or if using other colours, choose a color on the palette shown, or type in your own custom color values.

Once you have a palette of colours needed, and using the brightest colour first, fill in the brightest spots of the original colour with the new colour. This can be done by using either the pencil tool, or the fill tool. Be sure to replace EVERY pixel of the original color with the new color.

Now that the first colour is done, repeat the process for the rest of the colours. The darker the original color, the darker the new colour should be... Once all the colours you want to replace have been replaced, you have finished the recolor... Once one sprite is done, you will still have alot more poses to go.

There are two other ways to recolor in this program as well, which can make recoloring a whole sheet take a very short amount of time. You could use the select by color tool on a color to select ALL pixels of the color, then go to "Image > Adjust color" to adjust the values to your liking. The other way is to go to "All Frames > Color Depth", set the image to 256-Colors, and select a color from the shown palette, whih now only shows colours the image uses. Choosing one of the colors, and changing the values while it's selected will change all pixels of that color to the new color. That can help in some ways.
